Mac Replaces the Entire Folder

Here is another rant on the Mac. On Windows, when you drag a folder onto the top of a folder with the same name, the system will recursively merge the content of both folders. On the Mac, you replace the entire folder when you do the same operation. This really pisses me off big time because I lost a bunch of important data. Sometimes I wonder the wisdom of switching to Mac.

I think Mac works as it should. This is way things work in *nixes.

What does Windows do, if both folders contain files with exactly same names? Rename everything?

On both Mac and Windows, if there is a folder that has the same name as the folder that you are copying from, the systems will prompt the user if it's ok to overwrite.

But overwrite on the Mac means that you delete the entire folder and replace it with the content of the folder that you are copying (or retaining the content of the 2nd folder).

On Windows, it will merge both content together. The user will be prompted if he/she wants to overwrite the destination file if 2 filenames are found to be the same.

The Windows behavior seems more logical than Mac. Oh... don't even get me started on data loss, you can't even find the deleted content on the Trash on Mac when you are overwriting.

You know, there's a reason (actually, many) Apple has a sub-5% market share in the general-purpose PC market... ;) But rest assured, should something bad happen to your Mac, like disappearing in the mail, they will have excellent customer service and replace it right away -- oh wait, they won't...
