Thomas Friedman on Fresh Air

Yesterday's interview with Tom Friedman on radio program Fresh Air with Terry Gross was excellent. It was one of the most thought-provoking (yet rational) views I have heard on foreign affairs and policies in recent months. Friedman talked about foreign affairs ranging from the recent Palestinian and Israeli elections, Iran, war in Iraq, and American energy policy. Definitely worth listening if you care about what is going on around the world. You can still listen to the interview here.

Friedman is fantastic in general. Alli and I have all his books, all of which are worth reading if you're interested. And his NYTimes columns are superb -- I find myself quoting him frequently in policy discussions. He also has the very (very!) rare position of being well-respected by both Israelis and Palestinians.

I love this guy. Maybe I'll listen to the Fresh Air web broadcast (or podcast?).

The problem with the issue of americam energy is that everyone turns energy into the root cause of american foreign policy. this view is over-simplified and inaccurate.

Friedman is a neo-liberal. that is to say, he thinks all world affairs can be understood via economic explanations- and explanations based of market economy. This world view is too reductionist. The world is moved by other factors such as religion, ethnic rivalry and of course fear of the future. these are factors that cannot be a part of the rational rubric of economic explanations or micro-economics world view
