Start of Thesis Proposal Development

Now that I am concurrently pursuing two degrees within ESD, I have to come out with a thesis topic with content that integrates the system engineering and/or management aspect of the SDM program with the policy aspect of the TPP program. Furthermore, I am beginning to feel that I should exploit my thesis as a key determinant of getting a job in think tanks and consulting firms. During the 2-hour drive to the Ikea store in New Haven last Saturday, I contemplated deeply on the thesis topic with the new focus and purpose. A possible thesis topic that I have in mind is one that is based on economic competitiveness, specifically how the business environment is affected by government policy and a nation's infrastructure like education, transportation, and finance. I like the direction where my thesis proposal is going. In the next few weeks, I need to narrow down my topic further.

Cool direction. So you will do one thesis for both SDM and TPP?

BTW, you're seriously wanting to work at a think tank? That's the very opposite of the entrepreneurial spirit you've got. What causes this change of direction?

Thanks for the reminding me the contradiction of my thoughts in your comment. You made a really good point. Lately, I have been second guessing my career options. When I factored in my age and monetary expectation into the equation, my career objectives changed. Entrepreneurship is still my first and foremost career objective. Unfortunately, it is hard to incorporate entrepreneurship into a combined TPP/SDM thesis. Entrepreneurship credentials are better achieved by social networking and engaging in activities like 50k and MIT Enterprise Forum.

There are plenty of uncertainties in entrepreneurship. I want to use the thesis to get an interview with prospective employers. With a possible business economic based thesis topic, I figured it won’t hurt to consider think tank as a prospective employer. I am also curious about the working environment in think tanks. Call me naive, I always perceive think tank and consulting firms to be equivalent of each other. I have babbled enough, we’ll talk later tonight at Jillian’s…

Oh man: think tanks and consulting firms are SO different. The former is all theory, no action, little money, great hours, lots of policy and politics alike. The latter is all practice, little theory, all action, much money, shitty hours, some politics but not much policy, unless you're unfortunate enough to be in the worst intersection, consulting for a government client.

I'll see you at Jillian's, though I'm likely to be late. We're going to a concert at The Roxy first. I hope the Jillian's event runs late into the night...

Yep, I see the distinction now. :-)

Like I said before, that was a naive question.
